Mt. Shasta Promotion Test Slideshow
As Advertised: Memorable and Rewarding
Master Brian Wright, Erin Freeman, Drew Cahoon, and Vlad Tomashiro-Loma traveled all the way to beautiful Mt. Shasta in Northern California to participate in a comprehensive martial arts summer camp at McCloud High School. They joined over 120 dedicated participants and instructors from Idaho, Wyoming, UC Berkeley, and Korea for training in taekwondo, yongmudo (hapkido), judo, kumdo, and ssirum.
Other Taekwondo Club participants included Dr. David Chen, Taekwondo Club Founding President, and Master Chuck Buhs. Dr. Chen provided exceptional medical care for participants while Master Buhs served as Camp Director.
The event was hosted by the University of California Martial Arts Program (Master Wright's alma mater) with help from Mt. Shasta Martial Arts, led by head instructor, Dr. Peter Halt.
Many Instructors, Much Personal Attention
The instructional staff was exceptional with master instructors and Olympic medalists in taekwondo and judo. Taekwondo workouts were led by Master Je Gyoung Kim, 7th degree black belt and two-time heavyweight Olympic gold medalist (1992, 2000) and three-time heavyweight world champion (1993, 1995, 1997). Master Inchul Cho, 5th degree black belt and a silver (2000) and bronze (1996) Olympic medalist, led the judo workouts along with Master JiWhan Han, a fifth place Olympian in 2000.
Other instructors included Dr. Edward Lee (grandmaster in judo and taekwondo), Dr. Norman Link (6th degree black belt in yongmudo and Assistant Director of UCMAP), and Dr. Russell Ahn (6th degree black belt in taekwondo and Acting Director of UCMAP). This combination of instructors ensured that participants received a great deal of personal attention and instruction.
The group from Korea included a professor and six students from Yongin University. These students major in yongmudo and are exceptional martial artists. Their skill and enthusiasm were wonderful contributions to the overall focus of the camp. Learn more about Yongin University.
That's Not All
Not only did the group from GW get plenty of training, but Master Wright, Drew, and Vlad also took black belt tests in front of a grading panel led by Dr. Ken Min, founder of UCMAP and 9th degree black belt.
Master Wright's test for 6th degree black belt was first on the agenda. He demonstrated a variety of basic techniques and stances, flying kicks, pre-arranged sparring counterattacks, poomse, and board breaks.
Drew and Vlad followed the two people from Wyoming testing for 2nd degree black belt and were joined by two students from Mt. Shasta Martial Arts, Joe Alva and Crystal Coulter-Nava. The test was administered by Master Buhs who has trained with all four 1st dan candidates.
All three Taekwondo Club members did well and successfully passed their respective tests. Congratulations!
Lasting Impressions
With so much training under the supervision of such accomplished instructors in a beautiful spot made for a wonderful experience. The purpose of summer camp has always been to reinvigorate training by a return to natural surroundings away from home. This camp fulfilled this requirement very well and allowed the participants to expand their knowledge of martial arts.
