Directions
It’s easy to get to Klingle Mansion via Metro:

  • From the Cleveland Park Metro Station, walk north (towards Bethesda and away from the Uptown Theatre) 1/2 block.
  • Turn right on Porter Street.
  • Turn left at bottom of hill: Williamsburg Lane.
  • Klingle Mansion driveway is at the end of the street.

What’s the benefit?
Additional training outside the dojang is a refreshing change of pace. After a long week inside the dojang, getting out in the woods and fresh air practicing martial skills is invigorating.

Before paddles, comfortable cotten/polyester uniforms, protective gear, and modern training buildings, people would train wherever and whenever they could, using whatever training aids were available. In many places, the training location was simply heading off into the woods using the training aids provided by nature: cold streams, rocks, trees, and hills.

Although we keep it safe (both for us as well as the trees and rocks), training in Rock Creek Park is a little like connecting with our martial roots as we run up and down hills, practice kicks beneath the tree-lined canopy, and startle the wildlife with our fearsome kihaps.

Rock Creek Park Training Slideshow

Rock Creek Park is a large natural area in Washington, DC filled with a diverse variety of animals and plants.

Washington, DC (NPS)
“Linnean Hill or the Pierce-Klingle Mansion (NR) is located in the park at 3545 Williamsburg Lane. This large stone farmhouse was originally constructed by Issac Pierce in 1823 with later additions. The house now serves as the headquarters for the superintendent of Rock Creek Park.”

Wikipedia
“The main section of the park contains 1754 acres (7 km/2) along the Rock Creek Valley — more than twice the size of Central Park in New York City”

National Park Service
“Rock Creek Park is truly a gem in our nation's capital. It offers visitors an opportunity to reflect and soothe their spirits through the beauty of nature. Fresh air, majestic trees, wild animals, and the ebb and flow of Rock Creek emanate the delicate aura of the forest.”
