What's the benefit?
Additional training outside the dojang is a refreshing change of pace. After a long week inside the dojang, getting out in the woods and fresh air practicing martial skills is invigorating.
Before paddles, comfortable cotten/polyester uniforms, protective gear, and modern training buildings, people would train wherever and whenever they could, using whatever training aids were available. In many places, the training location was simply heading off into the woods using the training aids provided by nature: cold streams, rocks, trees, and hills.
Although we keep it safe (both for us as well as the trees and rocks), training in Rock Creek Park is a little like connecting with our martial roots as we run up and down hills, practice kicks beneath the tree-lined canopy, and startle the wildlife with our fearsome kihaps.
