General Information
Since October of 2004, a satellite club affiliated with The George Washington University Taekwondo Club has been practicing at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, MD. BSO Taekwondo was originally started as a convenient extra-curricular activity for Baltimore Symphony employees, but is happy to open its doors to the entire Baltimore Area Community.
Who attends these workouts?
BSO Taekwondo's membership includes a wide age range, but is mostly made up of adult professionals who live and work in the Baltimore Area.
I don't feel like I'm in very good shape right now, should I join?
Absolutely! There is no minimum conditioning requirement for joining the club and there's no time like the present. The benefits are many and include improved cardiovascular conditioning, increased self-confidence, a greater ability to handle stressful situations, knowledge of self-defense, and a chance to experience something totally outside of most people's daily lives. Besides, it's the job of the instructor to tailor the class to the widely varying abilities of those who attend.
Who is the instructor?
Todd Whaley, 1st gup, is the acting instructor of BSO Taekwondo. He instructs according to the technical specifications established by the Kukkiwon, international headquarters of taekwondo in Seoul, South Korea. The BSO club functions under the auspices of The George Washington University Taekwondo Club and is guided by its head instructor, Master Brian Wright, 6th degree black belt. Master Wright and other experienced instructors from the Taekwondo Club periodically teach at BSO Taekwondo.
What is the cost?
A uniform is required (once you have decided to commit to the club). The standard uniform costs $25 (via check or cash). A uniform of higher quality material is also available for $45. Your instructor will take orders for uniforms and bring them to practice within a few weeks.
Dues cost $40 per semester (payable via check or cash). The semester is oriented around GWU's academic calendar (September-December, January-April, May-August). BSO Taekwondo members are full members of the Taekwondo Club and the dues allow them to participate in all club activities.
Note: All uniform fees and club dues are deposited in the Taekwondo Club bank account and used expressly to offset costs for club-sponsored activities including promotion test dinners, registration and travel for competition events, and weekend training in locales such as West Virginia.
How do I sign up?! What if I have more questions?
Send an e-mail to Todd Whaley expressing your interest (). He'll be happy to answer any further questions you might have and provide you with a few more details you'll need for your first practice. If you have more general questions about Taekwondo, please see the Frequently Asked Questions.
