Al Qaeda’s Fantasy Ideology (Policy Review online)
by Lee Harris
"The terror attack of 9-11 was...a spectacular piece of theater. The targets were chosen by al Qaeda not through military calculationin contrast, for example, to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harborbut entirely because they stood as symbols of American power universally recognized by the Arab street. They were gigantic props in a grandiose spectacle in which the collective fantasy of radical Islam was brought vividly to life: A mere handful of Muslims, men whose will was absolutely pure, as proven by their martyrdom, brought down the haughty towers erected by the Great Satan." Those attackers are pretty [expletive] sorry, because they ran into the toughest son a bitch I’ve ever known.’"

Afghanistan/Taliban Photo Gallery(National Geographic)
by Ilkka Uimonen
"For six weeks in fall 1996 I documented the Taliban, the Islamic fundamentalist militia, as they took over Kabul, the capital. I saw them impose Sharia--Muslim law--and how it affected the lives of women. On that first trip and on later visits I saw how ethnic divisions perpetuate the fighting that permeates daily life."
