Interesting sites that highlight the use of martial arts in movies and television programs.

  1. The Masutatsu Oyama Trilogy (The Trades)
    by Max Braden
“In 1975, Sonny Chiba starred in the first of three movies that dramatized Oyama’s life in Japan. Chiba was well suited to play the part. Not only could he perform the moves convincingly, but his intense eyes gave off the kind of intimidation one would expect from someone with Oyama’s personality. Chiba plays Oyama as both conflicted and explosive, driven to prove himself as the toughest fighter around even when endeavor keeps getting him into trouble...The fights may not top lists of the best martial arts scenes in cinema, but the movies do present Chiba in his wild-eyed prime, and a different type of character than the noble Shaolin fare.” NOTE: Mr. Chiba was a student of Oyama Sensei. 2. Making teacher’s tale ‘Legend’ (DailyPress.com)
Williamsburg’s Kory Juul, who worked on ‘Spider-Man 3’ and third ‘Pirates’, sets out to direct martial-arts film.
    by Mike Holtzclaw

“[Kory] Juul, 28, is directing ‘White Tiger Legend,’ an animated martial arts film due out next year...He said the storyline originated with his martial arts instructor. ‘The concept had been rolling round in my teacher’s head for about 20 years,’ he said. ‘As I started getting closer to my black belt, he started slowly unveiling to me this story, hoping I would gather little pieces of insight to get through my own training. But it took on a life of its own, and I translated the lessons into a movie.’ (Originally Published: 5/22/2007; Last DCTKD update: 5/29/2007)
  3. Hong Kong director Stanley Kwan plans biopic on Bruce Lee (Canada.com)
    by Min Lee
“A respected Hong Kong director said Monday he is negotiating with the family of Bruce Lee for approval to shoot a movie about the late action star. Stanley Kwan said his movie will explore how Lee was influenced by the absence of his father, and how he brought up his own son, Brandon Lee. It will also look at how Bruce Lee turned into a master of martial arts, he said.” (Originally Published: 5/7/2007; Last DCTKD update: 6/14/2007)
