The Samurai where the premier psuedo-military officials of feudal Japan. Well known for their discipline and fighting ability, the Samurai where equipped with the most advanced weaponry available. This text highlights both the Samurai and Japanese law officers who employed a number of weapons of a non-lethal nature to subdue criminals. Some of the techniques and technology of the Samurai have trickled down into modern day defensive weapons. The jutte for example was a iron truncheon used by feudal era law enforcement officials to subdue opponents in a non-lethal manner. In place of a guard the jutte had one iron spike that ran parallel to to the "blade" portion of the weapon. This spike could be used to easily disarm an attacker or even snap the blade of a poorly made sword. Today a jutte-like truncheon can be purchased at nearly any self defense shop complete with a parallel "spike" guard. These weapons and others are described for their original function. This information is relevant as it gave a solid and concise background to modern self defense weapons' origins.
