"Whole Legitimacy Thing, The"
http://koryu.com/library/kfriday1.html Recommended w/reservation This article is an attempt by Dr. Carl Friday to bring to light the issues of legitimacy associated with teaching koryu arts. Dr. Friday begins by identifying one of the forms of koryu, Katori Shint-ry, where questions about the legitimacy of teachers have lead to discussions and controversy surrounding learning the art form. Dr. Friday asserts that the issue with this is very important and one that must be examined carefully. It is his opinion, the traditions and practices of becoming a sanctioned instructor speaks is the heart of what the art form is. Friday acknowledges that there is a widely held belief that the lineage of instructors and the legitimacy is a moot point in reference to the day to day training and learning of the art, but Friday argues that these rules regarding that authorization to teach must be upheld for the sake of respecting the rights of the usage of the name and to preserve the succession of the art form from one generation to the next. The article was rather interesting and Dr. Friday makes very valid points regarding the subject. The arguments that he makes for the preservation of the current system of teachers being sanctioned is much like the arguments made for intellectual property. Dr. Friday states that it is not a matter of how good a teacher is, it's the respect of the family or individual that owns the name of the art form which is important. This idea seems a little odd at first, but Dr. Friday argues effectively that by respecting the authority of the art form, you are respecting and abiding by the traditions of the art form. Dr. Friday also makes a distinction between learning about the techniques and training in them, and how distinction between the two affects this idea. I found this article to be rather interesting. Reading Dr. Friday's views on the subject were useful in seeing some of the moral and ethical issues with martial arts. Although the topic is rather narrow, I feel that the information that is presented here can be used to support similar issues in other art forms.
