Taekwondo Techniques & TacticsPark, Yeon Hwan and Tom Seabourne
Champaign: Human Kinetics, 181 pages (1997) Recommended w/reservation According to the authors of Techniques & Tactics, taekwondo "affects every aspect of your being." Masters Y. H. Park and Tom Seabourne layout the basics of the entire martial art of taekwondo in a quick and easy book. The book is designed to help practitioners develop their own personal and unique formula for optimal performance. Although the book would most benefit novice martial artists, anyone could use the book as a refresher to sharpen skills that already exist. The beginning of the book provides an introduction to the art and how it is practiced. The first few chapters are a helpful explanation of things such as the belt and rank system and the history of Taekwondo. This kind of information is often not explained directly in the dojang and practitioners who do not read books such as Techniques & Tactics may be slow to learn important information about their art and the Korean culture. Techniques & Tactics becomes more of a reference tool in the middle chapters. The book has several lists for training terms in Korean that could help make sense of what instructors say in class or referees say in tournaments. The short format makes the book a simple yet complete reference. Chapter Four has excellent pictures and easy to follow directions on how to fall properly to avoid injury. There are also chapters on stances, strikes, kicks, and blocks with great pictures and concise instructions. However, the book falls short in explaining the extensive science of forms. Supporting its goal of helping the practitioner improve his or her performance, the book has a brief but helpful chapter on competition. In addition to explaining the basic rules and scoring, the chapter has several paragraphs on the psychology of combat. A beginning student or a black belt would benefit from the instructions on how to use imagery to improve your game. In short, Taekwondo Techniques & Tactics is a simple and handy reference to keep with you as you train. Annotated by: Erin Bingham (March 2000)
