Shogun Scrolls: Shogun no Rin
Rutland, VT: Charles E. Tuttle Company, 102 pages (1977) Recommended w/reservation Stephen F. Kaufman presents the Shogun Scrolls. The scrolls were originally written by Hidetomo Nakadai for the first shogun of Japan, Minamoto Yoritomo, in the late twelfth century. The scrolls were advice on how to gain control of and rule domains. Mr. Kaufman suggests that the advice in the scrolls were literal advice for the twelfth century, but should only be used as guidance in the twentieth century. Some of the topics include how to keep control of people, military tactics, troop management, and how to be a good leader. Mr. Kaufman's other works include The Art of War and The Martial Artist's Book of Five Rings. This book is of average reading ability. Annotated by: Paige Normand (April 1997)
