Sword of No-Sword: Life of the Master Warrior Tesshu
Boston: Shambala Publications, 169 pages (1989) Highly Recommended This work is a biography of Yamaoka Tesshu, a very dynamic individual who played a key role in negotiations during the Meiji Restoration. Tesshu was "a peerless swordsman who established the No-Sword School, a...compassionate Zen teacher in the Tekisui tradition, and an unrivalled calligrapher who gathered all things of heaven and earth in his brush." Tesshu, a confident of Emperor Meiji, also negotiated the terms of transfer for true political power from the Tokugowa shogunate back to the emperor in the 1860's. Written by a Professor of Buddhist Studies, this work can be forgiven for lapses in narrative continuity because of the author's enthusiasm as well as the wealth of poetry, paintings, calligraphy and stories relaying Tesshu's remarkable talents. Without reservation, this book is recommended as Essential Reading for any serious student of the martial arts. Annotated by: Charles A. Buhs (October 1995)
