New York: Weatherhill, Inc., 111 pages (1973) Recommended Like other Draeger books, this is well-written and quite comprehensive. Introducing the reader to Japanese martial culture before the era of Minamoto Yoritomo (the first permanent shogun of Japan, 1192-1199) through the reign of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1589-1597), Draeger provides a summary of the historical events and their relevance to the martial arts. The second section of this book summarizes the various weapon systems and their history. This book contains many photographs and illustrations, and along with Classical Budo: The Martial Arts and Ways of Japan (Volume 2) and Modern Bujutsu & Budo: The Martial Arts and Ways of Japan (Volume 3), provides and excellent introduction to the history and evolution of the Japanese martial arts.
