Master Wright began taekwondo during high school and continued training through the UC Berkeley Martial Arts Program under the direction of Dr. Ken Min. After graduating from Berkeley in 1992 with a degree in Asian Studies, he moved to Washington, DC and helped found the GW Taekwondo Club. Today, Master Wright continues to train with the club and teaches several courses (Taekwondo, Japanese Swordsmanship, and Asian Martial Arts: Origins and Development) in the Department of Exercise Science. He also operates Shan Shui Teas and is an avid woodworker, volunteering regularly for the Covenant House Artisans Woodshop.

Club Officers

President: Zach Nathanson, 6th gup

A native of Long Island, New York, Zach studies Political Science and interns on Capitol Hill at The George Washington University. He began studying Taekwondo in 2006 and began his tenure as the President of the Taekwondo Club in mid-2007.

Treasurer: Greg Shapiro, 6th gup

Currently a junior studying Computer Science and Economics, Greg has trained with the GW Taekwondo club since his freshman year, also exploring other martial arts during periods of travel and work away from DC. Although perhaps more famous for his agile tree climbing and signature turkey burgers in West Virginia, Greg spends much of the year looking forward to the Collegiate National sparring and forms competition which the club sends members to each Spring.

Assistant Instructors

Mr. Kavi Masood, 2nd dan

Kavi's Taekwondo career began as a quest for physical fitness in the summer of 1999, and continues today. Since then, he has served two terms as club treasurer and been a regular at club events. In his spare time, he tries his hand at music and child safety seats, and is contemplating taking the dive into the world of poor doctoral students.

Mr. Drew Cahoon, 1st dan

Drew is the inaugural instructor at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He began studying Taekwondo with the Boston University Collegiate club in 1996 and resumed again (after a long hiatus) in March of 2002 at the Peabody Conservatory with Mr. Jim Nix. Shortly thereafter, he started making the trip to DC on a regular basis to supplement his training. He has participated in various scrimmages, training camps, and the 2003 GW Open tournament. Drew is currently a Senior Consultant with Jacobson Consulting Applications, Inc.

Mr. Todd Whaley, 1st gup

Todd is the current instructor at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Maryland. He began studying Taekwondo in the fall of 2004 with Mr. Drew Cahoon and participates regularly with the Taekwondo Club. Currently he is an Associate with RTKL Associates, Inc., an international architectural design firm, in Washington, DC.

The club workouts hosted by the Baltimore Symphony meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 7:30pm at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral Street, Baltimore, MD 21201. More Information
