Club History
The Taekwondo Club began in the Spring of 1992 with the cooperation of three alumni of the UC Berkeley Martial Arts Program. Dr. Dave Chen, Chuck Thornton (both in their second semesters of medical school and graduate school, respectively), and Master Brian Wright, filed the paperwork to register the student club. Other black belts on campus soon joined, notably Dr. Larry Gritz, Thomas Oh, and Jon Kim. Before the end of the year, two other UCMAP alumni also joined: Joy Wright and Chuck Buhs.
The fledgling club continued training over that summer, and by the fall, it was a thriving club activity on campus.
Since then, it has offered continuous instruction and provided a wide-selection of training and competition opportunities including national, state, and collegiate championships, local tournaments, our own tournament, training in Rock Creek Park, training in the West Virginia wilderness, training in rural Pennsylvania, joint workouts with the karate club, sparring scrimmages with other collegiate and local clubs, and more.
